HS HOOPS ROUNDUP: Rector nets 27, Matadors rally from 10-point deficit to beat Brownfield

Estacado 72, Brownfield 65


Bryan Rector poured in 27 points and Donald Young hit a tiebreaking 3-point goal as Estacado rallied from a 10-point deficit in the last 3:10 to beat Brownfield on Friday night in a District 2-4A opener.

Estacado (13-5, 1-0) trailed 60-50 before mounting the winning rally. Young’s 3 gave the Matadors a 68-65 lead, and then the Mats hit free throws to seal the outcome.

Young and Rector each had eight points in the fourth quarter, and Young finished with 12. Aldon Johnson and Jordan Sherman had 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Matadors.

Estacado withstood a 34-point performance by Brownfield’s Zack Muniz. The Cubs got 10 points from Nunie Ramirez and nine from Deveen Reed.

Lubbock Christian (HS) 56,

Midland Classical 40

Trip Lowe and Alex Lack combined for 30 points as Lubbock Christian High School defeated Midland Classical in a non-district game Friday.

The Eagles led 33-13 at halftime.

Lowe finished with a game-high 16 points, while Lack added 14 points.

Cole Miller (15 points) and Aaron Griffin (10) led the way for Midland Classical on the offensive end.

Odessa Permian 58, Frenship 29

WOLFFORTH — Cal Dykes scored 13 points, but the rest of his teammates could not find the bottom of the rim as Frenship was defeated by Permian in the District 2-6A opener for both squads Friday.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 12-12 overall and 0-1 in district play.

Frenship will look to bounce back in a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday road contest against Tascosa.

Shallowater 74, Dimmitt 47

SHALLOWATER — Collin Stephenson and Mitch Stutler combined for 37 points as Shallowater defeated Dimmitt in District 2-3A play on Friday.

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick start, leading 34-19 at halftime, and never looking back.

Stephenson led all scorers with 20 points while Stutler chipped in 17 points.

Lubbock-Cooper 82, Coronado 35

WOODROW — McKauley Gregory scored 16 points, leading a trio who finished in double figures, as Lubbock-Cooper defeated Coronado in a District 4-5A game Friday.

Kayli Rowland and Katy Fairbanks netted 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the win for the Lady Pirates.

Lauren Hernandez finished with 13 points to lead the Lady Mustangs.

Coronado is set to host Lubbock at 6 p.m. Tuesday in district play.

Lubbock-Cooper, which led 42-11 at halftime, is scheduled to play a 6 p.m. Tuesday road game against Monterey in district play.
