HS Soccer Roundup: Plainsmen defeat Canutillo in penalty kicks

The Monterey boys soccer team defeated Canutillo 7-6 in penalty kicks in the 2018 Kickoff Classic on Friday.

 

In regulation, Marc Cabrera scored the team’s lone goal and Adam Rodriguez recorded 11 saves. Cabrera, Coby Rivera, Jayden Johns, Isaac Hernandez, Pedro Lopez, Alex Perez hit their penalty kicks and Rodriguez earned the win for the Plainsmen.

Monterey faces El Paso Hanks at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lowrey Field’s PlainsCapital Park.

Lubbock-Cooper 2, Pampa 0

BURLESON — Jonny Garcia scored once as the Pirates defeated Pampa 2-0 on Friday in the Boomtown Invitational.

The Harvesters suffered an own goal in the loss.

The Pirates continue tournament play against Gainesville at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Girls

Southlake Carroll 3, Frenship 2

GEORGETOWN — The Frenship girls soccer team fell to Southlake Carroll 3-2 in the Governors Cup on Friday.

The Tigers tied the Lady Dragons at halftime with two goals apiece. Madyson Hoel and Natalie Jones recorded goals for Frenship.

The Lady Tigers continue tournament play against Plano West at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Amarillo 2, Coronado 1

The Lady Mustangs fell to the Lady Sandies 2-1 in the 2018 Kickoff Classic on Friday.

Coronado’s Piper Granto set up Kierra Dominguez for the lone goal of the match.

The Lady Mustangs face Midland at 1 p.m. Saturday in their tournament finale.

Monterey 5, Caprock 4

The Lady Plainsmen defeated the Lady Longhorns 5-4 in penalty kicks in the 2018 Kickoff Classic on Friday.

Abrysha Walker scored two goals as Monterey sent the game into overtime.

Frenship 1, Copell 1

GEORGETOWN — Frenship and Coppell battled to a 1-1 tie in the Governors Cup on Thursday.

Aryal Garcia had Frenship’s sole goal. The Tigers recorded 17 shots on goal.
