HS BOYS HOOPS ROUNDUP: Monterey nearly double ups Canyon High

Monterey 59, Canyon High 30

 

Dadrian Humphries scored a game-high 12 points in the Monterey basketball team’s 59-30 win Tuesday against Canyon.

The Plainsmen (4-2) jumped out early behind a sound defense that fueled extended runs.

“I was impressed,” Monterey coach Jeremy McFerrin said. “It’s good coming off a practice, having one day of practice and playing on a Tuesday night. I think the guys were excited to play at home, and they started learning some things this weekend at the Gene Messer Shootout.”

The Plainsmen’s Austyn Sanchez scored 10 points while teammates Qua Butler and Camden Grant scored eight points apiece.

Nathan Hoggatt led the Eagles with seven points.

Monterey starts the Burkburnett Tournament against the host team at 7 p.m. Friday.

Coronado 79, Abilene High 74

Ahmari Williams dropped 18 points as Coronado defeated Abilene High 79-74 in a non-district game.

Christian Akard scored 13 points for the Mustangs. Bronzae Giddens had 12 points.

Coronado is scheduled to play in the Greenville Tournament from Thursday through Saturday.

New Deal 75, Sundown 66

SUNDOWN — DK Blaylock recorded a game-high 27 points as New Deal defeated Sundown 75-66 in a non-district game.

Michael Brazell scored 25 points for the Lions. Dylan Jerden had eight points.

Abraham Boncanegra recorded 26 points for the Roughnecks.

New Deal hosts Lockney at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.

Sundown is slated to play in the Dimmitt Tournament from Thursday through Saturday,

Andrews 69, Shallowater 67

SHALLOWATER — Josh Servantez scored 21 points as Shallowater fell to Andrews 69-67 in a non-district game.

Jett Johnston scored 15 points for Shallowater. Aaron Koch had 11 points.

Shallowater hosts Lubbock High at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
