SHALLOWATER — Paige Royal and Natalie Velardez scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, as No. 5 Levelland downed Shallowater 70-53 in an early season matchup of traditional playoff contenders.
Makayla Escue and Miranda Villegas added 10 points apiece for Levelland (2-0), and Mari Ruiz chipped in eight.
Cailyn Breckel paced Shallowater (0-1) with 15 points, followed by Jordyn Aragon with 11.
Levelland is slated to play in the Ponder Tournament on Thursday through Saturday.
Shallowater hosts Lamesa at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
PLAINVIEW — Jesse Long scored a game-high 14 points as Plainview defeated Monterey 55-45 in a non-district game.
Taylor Stevenson and Osen Ellis both scored eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Braylyn Dollar and Maddi Stephens recorded nine points each for the Lady Plainsmen. Sydni Wagoner had seven points.
Monterey (3-3) hosts Midland Lee at 6 p.m. Friday.
Plainview (2-1) is scheduled to play at the Marble Falls Tournament set for Thursday through Saturday.
ABILENE — Jacey Hise totaled a game-high 14 points as Lubbock-Cooper defeated Abilene Wylie 61-36 in a non-district game.
Maddy Rodriguez scored 12 points for the Lady Pirates. Avrie Douglas had 11 points.
Lubbock-Cooper (3-1) is slated to play at the Canyon Tournament slated for Friday through Saturday.
All Saints Episcopal
AMARILLO — Tatum Harper recorded 19 points as All Saints Episcopal defeated Amarillo Ascension in their season opener.
Sara Phy totaled seven points for the Patriots. Katie Bayouth had six points.
All Saints (1-0) hosts Lubbock Christian (HS) at 10 a.m. Monday.
Clarrissa Francis dropped 10 points as Lubbock High fell to San Angelo Central 43-31 in a non-district game.
Keaira Garcia scored six points for the Lady Westerners. Jaiden Eaton had five points.
Lubbock High (2-4) hosts Tascosa at 6 p.m. Friday.
SEMINOLE — Kade Johnston scored 17 points and two teammates joined him in double figures as Lubbock-Cooper knocked off No. 3 Seminole, a Region I-4A finalist last season.
Daniel Fiddler and Cameron Drainville added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Pirates.
Clayton Medlin poured in 26 for Seminole, which was playing without standout center Reese Moore, who’s still with the football team. Cade Barnard also did not play as he’s also with the Indians football team.
The Indians got nine points apiece from Carter Laramore and Carter Johnson, two other returnees from a team that lost the Region I-4A final on a buzzer-beating shot.
Cooper hosts Canyon High at 5 p.m. Friday. Seminole is scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Odessa High.
PLAINVIEW – Jacob Soriano scored 20 points, De’Quadrick Butler added 19 and Monterey overcame a 24-point deficit to beat Plainview 85-76 in a season opener.
Plainview scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to lead 39-15 before Monterey mounted a charge of its own.
The Plainsmen got 11 points from Austyn Sanchez, 10 from Cody Martin and eight from Dadrian Humphrey.
Adrian Hinojosa led Plainview with 28 points, followed by Grayson Moore with 18 and Joseph Guy with 11.
There were 59 fouls in the game and each team had three players foul out.
WOLFFORTH — Isaac Auvermann hit a 3-point goal with no time left to give Amarillo High a 47-46 win against Frenship in the Tigers’ season opener.
Frenship (0-1) missed the front end of a one-and-one with 19 seconds to play and the Sandies (1-1) came up with possession on Grayson Smith’s rebound. Amarillo called timeout with five seconds to play and designed a set for Auvermann.
Frenship led 28-22 at halftime, but Amarillo tied the score at 41-41 with 3:52 left in the game. The Sandies also took a 44-43 with 2:20 to play in regulation. Jack Kirkpatrick’s 3-point play put the Tigers back in charge with 1:18 to play before they dropped a heartbreaker at home.
Frenship will be in action Thursday and Saturday at Lubbock-Cooper’s tournament.
