Anderson, Gray named Lone Star Varsity Athletes of the Week

Maggie Anderson, Ropes girls basketball

The freshman scored 25 points as Ropes defeated Petersburg 95-10 win last week. Anderson has played a huge role for the Lady Eagles this season.

“She had a big impact, but she’s had a big impact on our group all-season long. Through the first nine games for sure,” Ropes coach Mike McCann said. “Maggie has a very high basketball IQ. I think it was apparent even in junior high that she had the opportunity to make an impact in high school pretty early.”

Anderson received 74.5 percent of the vote in the Lone Star Varsity Athlete of the Week poll for the victory.

Ropes hosts Sands at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Qua Gray, Coronado football

The senior threw for 449 yards and six touchdowns as Coronado defeated Colleyville Heritage 80-62 in a Class 5A Division I regional semifinal game. Gray has helped Coronado move on to the quarterfinals, the furthest a Lubbock ISD school has advanced since 1992.

Gray leads the Lone Star Varsity coverage area in several passing categories, including passing yards (4,166), completions (257), attempts (395) and passing touchdowns (56). The senior has helped guide the Mustangs to a 13-0 record.

Gray received 51.8 percent of the vote in the Lone Star Varsity Athlete of the Week poll for the victory.

Coronado is scheduled to play at 2 p.m. Saturday against Denton Ryan at Abilene Christian University’s Wildcat Stadium in the Class 5A Division I state quarterfinal.
