Tech LB Johnathan Picone announces plan to transfer

Texas Tech linebacker Johnathan Picone on Friday announced he intends to transfer out of the program.

In a memo posted on social media, Picone thanked Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury and linebackers coach Zac Spavital and wrote, “I am going to miss all the relationships I have made in Lubbock and West Texas dearly.”

Picone is a 6-foot-1, 225-pound sophomore from Mandeville, Louisiana. He played in 11 games in 2016, mostly on special teams. He suffered a dislocated toe and missed the last six sessions of spring practice in 2017, then redshirted.

Picone didn’t have an obvious path to playing time in 2018 with the Red Raiders’ returning linebacker pool of starters Jordyn Brooks and Dakota Allen and top backups Riko Jeffers, Christian Taylor and Brayden Stringer.
