Dig This: Red Raiders face UC Irvine as postseason continues

Following two straight sweeps, the Texas Tech volleyball team finds itself in the quarterfinal round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

 

The Red Raiders (17-14) are slated to face off against UC Irvine (24-7) at 4 p.m. Wednesday at TCU’s University Recreation Center. TCU (14-16) is hosting Green Bay (17-15) in the other quarterfinal matchup Wednesday.

The two winners from both quarterfinals will play each other in a 7 p.m. Thursday semifinal match in the same venue.

Texas Tech is coming off a 25-18, 25-10, 26-24 victory over Texas State, while dispatching SMU 26-24, 25-23. 25-20 to win advance through the first two rounds of the NIVC.

In those two matches, Chandler Atwood and Emily Hill turned in standout performances. The Red Raiders duo combined for 37 kills in the victory over SMU, while chipping 26 more in the triumph over Bobcats.

UC Irvine, which finished third in the Big West Conference, swept Sacramento State before outlasting Pacific in five sets to get to the quarterfinals.

The Anteaters are led by juniors Harlee Kekauoha, Haley DeSales and Idara Akpakpa. The trio was named to the 2017 Big West First Team.

Texas Tech and UC Irvine will face off for the fifth time in overall series. The Red Raiders lead the series, 2-1-1, which dates back to 1978. In the previous meeting between the two squads, the Red Raiders defeated UC Irvine in three sets.
