Lowdown: Brownfield will defend its fourth place district seeding when it takes on the Mustangs on Friday, and the Cubs anticipate a sound baseball squad with a productive pitching staff.
“We are going to see a competitive baseball team,” Brownfield coach Bart Upchurch said. “Their pitchers throw the ball well. They will throw a lot of strikes and make the routine play behind them. It should be a very good baseball game.”
Denver City nearly rallied in its 5-4 lost to district leaders Levelland on Tuesday. The Mustangs scored two runs in the seventh inning, but could not push the game tieing runner across the plate to stay in the game.
Denver City’s Ivan Villareal and Michael Garcia went 2 for 4 with an RBI and 2 for 3 with two runs, respectively, in the loss to the Lobos.
For Brownfield, senior catcher Michael Madrigal has helped lead his team this season. The Wayland Baptist University signee went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the Cubs’ 8-4 win over Estacado on Tuesday, while teammate Kris Florez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
On the mound, Brownfield pitchers Steven Gomez and Christopher Martinez combined for eight strikeouts against the Matadors. Madrigal adds to the depth of the Cubs pitching staff, as well.
