Lady Pirates start Caprock Classic hot

WOODROW — The Cooper softball team started its Caprock Classic run hot and didn’t cool down.

Led by a sound defense, the Lady Pirates defeated Seminole 6-0 on their home field Thursday afternoon. Cooper started out Day 2 of pool play against Plainview, shutting out the Lady Bulldogs 10-0.

“We have been pretty consistent defensively through our scrimmages and pitching we have been hitting our spots well,” Lady Pirate coach Landon Winton said. “We are keeping the other teams at bay and trying to work our offense. Usually at the beginning of the year, the offense struggles to get hot, but I think we are starting to get there. We have more girls swinging like they can than a week ago.”

Cooper’s Marli Goolsby impressed in the circle. The junior pitcher struck out five batters and gave up two hits in four inning to earn the win.

“If feels great to start off strong,” Goolsby said. “It will push us through bracket play to get us into the Gold Bracket later on, hopefully.”

The Lady Pirates’ Reagan Robertson, who is a returning Class 5A all-state selection, showed off a strong swing at the plate. The junior shortstop led the team with four RBIs.

In the bottom of the first inning, Cooper’s Theron Zachary (two runs) singled on a bunt and Autumn White was walked to put two runners on. Robertson sent a sacrifice fly deep into center field to score her teammates and clear the bases.

The Maidens struggled to respond in the top of the second inning, getting retired in order.

Seminole threatened to score in the top of the fourth when Alicia Rosalez singled to center and advanced to third. However, Lexy Hernandez was thrown out at first base to end the Maiden’s final series at-bat.

“I think we are solid in all the spots,” Winton said. “That’s kind of the big deal. Right now there is not a weakness out there that we are hoping they don’t hit it to so-and-so, and that helps with the pitching.”

The Lady Pirates’ Thiery Zachart doubled to center field to drive in Posey Pence, who had doubled to left field, in the bottom of the second. Robertson rounded off the six run route, scoring on a wild pitch in the third.

According to Goolsby, the Caprock is the first step in what has become a long-term goal for Cooper.

“We are trying to push everybody so we can hopefully make it to state,” she said.
