No American president even traveled internationally until 1906 — when then President Teddy Roosevelt visited Panama to check on progress of the canal. Of course, although called the “Panama Canal,” it was a U.S.-controlled project in a U.S.-controlled enclave, so the American public did not much mind his going there.
