The Accident Investigation Unit with the Lubbock Police Department is investigating the death of a child who was struck by a pickup truck in Central Lubbock on Tuesday night.
About 7 p.m., it appears a man went to a home in the area of 4400 43rd Street to look at a car for sale, said LPD spokeswoman Tiffany Pelt.
“During this time, children were playing in the front yard,” she said. “The man, who had parked the pickup truck along the curb, got into the vehicle to leave.”
The pickup was parked correctly on the curb of the street in front of the residence, according to a police report.
Damion Mendoza, 18 months old, was playing with a toy barrel with wheels that could be pushed and ran out into the street in front of the pickup before the driver took off, according to the report.
“The child was struck as the pickup began to move forward,” said Pelt.
The driver, along with a relative of the child in the pickup, immediately took Damion to the hospital, she said.
“The child was later pronounced deceased at the hospital,” said Pelt.
At this time, all involved parties are cooperating with investigators, she said. The case remained under investigation by the LPD Accident Investigation Unit by Wednesday morning.
