Cera, Brangers lead SPC victories

BORGER — Shooting guard Elizabeth Cera scored 20 points, forward Jasauen Beard had 17 points and 10 rebounds and No. 8 South Plains College polished off Frank Phillips 80-68 Monday night, staying within one game of the lead in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference women’s basketball race.

 

Lady Texans forward Yanina Inkina just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, and point guard Brittany Smith logged 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

South Plains (22-3, 7-2) has won five games in a row. The Lady Texans are chasing No. 5 New Mexico Junior College (19-4, 8-1), a 64-56 victor Monday at Western Texas, and No. 1 Odessa College (19-1, 7-1). which was idle.

Frank Phillips (13-7, 2-6) has lost five in a row.

BORGER — Texas Tech signee Jordan Brangers scored 23 points, fellow Tech signee Josh Webster piled up 11 assists and forward Jahlil Tripp notched a double-double, leading No. 1 South Plains College to an easy WJCAC victory at Frank Phillips.

Tripp, the 6-foot-5 freshman from Brooklyn, New York, had 14 points and 10 rebounds as South Plains improved to 22-0 and 10-0 in the WJCAC. The Texans went into the night one game ahead of No. 16 Odessa College (19-3, 8-1), which was playing at New Mexico Military Institute.

Colorado State signee Raquan Mitchell also had 14 points for the Texans, and Nevada signee Shawntrez Davis added eight.

South Plains built a 44-22 halftime lead, was up by 36 points midway through the second half and shot 58 percent for the game. Brangers, a 6-2 guard, made 7 of 11 from 3-point range and Mitchell, a 6-3 guard, was 4 of 5 on 3s. The Texans were 14 of 33 from long range.
