South Plains College to present ‘An Intimate Evening with Josh Abbott’

South Plains College will feature a special guest on Feb. 22 in the Mallet Event Center during its 20th Annual Scholarship Gala, which has been reconfigured to include a business casual atmosphere and the availability of beer and wine at a different venue.

South Plains College will present “An Intimate Evening with Josh Abbott,” which will feature Abbott and members of his band who are SPC alums during the event in Levelland.

Abbott and three fraternity brothers formed the band while attending Texas Tech in 2006, and they have gone on to have three singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including “Oh, Tonight.” They also have a top 10 album with the 2012 release of “Small Town Family Dreams.”

Unlike a typical country music event, this SPC Gala will also include live and silent auction raffles, with all proceeds going to student scholarships.

“The purpose of the Scholarship Gala is to raise funds for scholarships,” said Julie Gerstenberger, SPC’s director of development and alumni relations. “More than 800 South Plains College students are receiving scholarship support from the SPC Foundation this academic year. Our guests will have an enjoyable evening in support of this wonderful cause.”

The 2018 Pacesetter Award will also be presented by the SPC Foundation board to recognize philanthropy that sets the pace and inspires others to support higher education. This is the foundation’s 16th year to bestow the Pacesetter Award.

Sponsorships of the event will be different this year, with some featuring a VIP Meet and Greet immediately before the gala. The sponsorship levels are Underwriting Partner for $7,500; Diamond Sponsor for $5,000; Ruby Sponsor for $2,000; Sapphire Sponsor for $1,000; and Gold Sponsor for $125.

Gerstenberger said there are opportunities for community involvement now and until the event itself. Interested patrons can purchase tables and tickets now. Payment for sponsorships may be made by check or credit card, and is due by April 1.

In addition, both live and silent auction items are needed as well as cash donations. For assistance, call Bessie Costilla at (806) 716-2019 or email
