Fisherman wait out rain for Lubbock’s 9th annual Vamos a Pescar event

The ninth annual Vamos a Pescar event began at 6 a.m. Saturday, even though rain moved through the Lubbock area shortly after the event started at Buddy Holly Lake in North Lubbock.

The annual event was organized by Los Hermanos Familia, a local nonprofit organization that uses fishing as a hook to bring families together, according to the event’s Facebook page.

“It was great. It was amazing,” said Christy Martinez-Garcia, organizer and publisher of Latino Lubbock Magazine. “When we were first there, it was already shoulder to shoulder. We had about 3,500 people pre-registered.”

Once the rain came down around 6:15 to 6:30 a.m., Martinez-Garcia said the rain got heavier and didn’t stop for a while.

She said the devoted fisherman waited out the rain. Ultimately, she said, there were approximately 1,800 people who stuck around for the event.

“We always prepare for anything,” said Martinez-Garcia. “We always have a plan B and plan C. The people that were supposed to be there today were there, and to me, I feel like we got to build memories in the beautiful weather. It stopped, and it was sunny, and it was just a gorgeous day altogether.”
