Letter to editor: Congress must protect people

Congress must protect people

Dear Congress,

You have a “duty” to protect the people of the United States, but you allow military-type assault weapons to be in the hands of American citizens. It is not just that criminals shouldn’t have them, no one should. It is not just mental illness. It is about good and evil.

The framers of the U.S. Constitution said that “Congress must have the courage to change the laws to protect its people.” When the Second Amendment was created, the framers had no idea that there would ever be a weapon that could shoot multiple times before reloading.

There is no place off limits as targets: our schools, public recreation venues and now our churches.

We must stop this violence.

TOMMY L. PARKER/Lubbock
