Goodyear Blimp to make way over Lubbock

The Goodyear Blimp Wingfoot Two will stop in Lubbock Oct. 20-23 in honor of McWhorter Tire Co.’s 75th anniversary of business.

The “Blimp Goes West Tour” stop is part of a 2,600-mile, cross-country journey from Akron, Ohio, to Los Angeles with a 26-person crew and a caravan of nine ground vehicles, according to a news release from Goodyear.

The Goodyear Blimp has a long history in American culture, and can often be seen at sport and entertainment events. The Lubbock stop coincides with Texas Tech’s homecoming weekend.

The Wingfoot Two Goodyear Blimp stretches more than 246 feet long — nearly the length of a football field. The airship has three vectored engines for enhanced maneuverability and can hit highway speeds of up to 73 mph. The blimp is supported by a semi-rigid frame composed of light-weight aluminum and carbon fiber that holds an envelope packed with 297,527 cubic feet of non-flammable helium, according to the news release.

A full schedule of opportunities to see the Goodyear Blimp will be released by McWhorter’s soon.
